Diabolos is a high-ranking voidsent originally summoned in the Fifth Astral Era by the voidmages of Mhach during the Battle of Amdapor. Intended to be their all-powerful secret weapon in their war against Amdapor, Diabolos was nearly successful in sacking the city, but both Mhach and Diabolos underestimated the power and perseverence of the Amdapori white mages. At a heavy cost, the white mages of Amdapor were able to seal Diabolos away in city, where he would wait until being released in the Seventh Astral Era.

Some fifteen centuries later, the Warrior of Light would find a now free Diabolos after an ill-fated excursion into the Lost City of Amdapor. Confused and thinking the adventuring party to be white mages of Amdapor, Diabolos attacks and flees upon his defeat.

Diabolos is not heard from again until the Warrior of Light ventures into the Void Ark, a Mhachi vessel originally designed to be their people's final hope in the face of the Calamity of Water. It is here that the Warrior of Light and the Redbills encounter Diabolos again. Once again, Diabolos escapes, carrying with him a coffin-like object — the Shadow Queen, Scathach.

The Warrior of Light and the Redbills travel to the Weeping City of Mhach in search of the Nullstone, a Mhachi artifact which can banish Diabolos back to the void. He fails to prevent the retrieval of this artifact, which ultimately leads to a final confrontation at the Mhachi settlement of Dun Scaith.

After the defeat of his servants at the hands of the Warrior of Light, including Ferdiad and Scathach herself, Diabolos takes it upon himself to destroy the intruders. After an initial battle, Diabolos consumed the defeated Scathach to become Diabolos Hollow, adding her own strength to his. Despite this added power, Diabolos is unable to prevent his own defeat and is ultimately banished back to the void by Cait Sith and the power of the Nullstone.
